Deconstruction Division
Researchers in JBEIs Deconstruction Division are developing new and improved ways to pretreat lignocellulose biomass to enhance its deconstruction into fermentable sugars. This involves searching for new deconstructive enzymes in microbial communities that inhabit a variety of environments, such as rain forest floors and composts. Once effective new natural enzymes have been identified, JBEI researchers will employ the tools of synthetic biology to design and engineer novel enzymes that are even better at lignocellulose deconstruction and do not yield unwanted by-products.
